Ingredients:

  1. 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  2. 4 large pita breads
  3. 1 large onion, finely chopped
  4. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  6. 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  7. 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  8. 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  9. 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  10. Salt and black pepper to taste
  11. 2 tablespoons olive oil (for brushing)

Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, onion, garlic, green bell pepper, tomatoes, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  • Split the pita breads halfway through to create a pocket. Stuff each pita evenly with the meat mixture, spreading it to the edges
  • Brush the outside of each stuffed pita with olive oil. Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the meat is cooked through and the pita is crispy.
  • Allow the Hawawshi to cool slightly before cutting into quarters. Serve warm.

Notes:

  • For a juicier filling, some prefer to mix a small amount of beef fat or butter into the meat mixture.
  • Hawawshi can be customized with additional spices like paprika or allspice, according to taste.
  • Serve with tahini sauce or a side of fresh cucumber and tomato salad for a refreshing balance.
