Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Cooking Time: 45 minutes
Resting Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
Serving: 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or lamb
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 10 sheets phyllo dough
  • 1/2 cup olive oil or melted butter for brushing

Method:

  1. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté the onion and garlic until translucent. Add the ground meat and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
    • Stir in the feta cheese, oregano, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Cook for a few minutes until well combined. Remove from heat and stir in chopped parsley. Allow the mixture to cool.
  2. Assemble the Pie:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly oil a 9×13 inch baking dish.
    • Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish, allowing it to overhang the sides slightly; brush with olive oil or melted butter. Repeat with four more sheets, brushing each with oil or butter.
    • Spread the meat mixture evenly over the phyllo base. Cover with the remaining phyllo sheets, oiling each layer, including the top.
  3. Bake:
    • Fold the overhanging dough over the top and brush with more oil or butter. Score the top lightly in a diamond or square pattern to allow steam to escape.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
    • Let the pie rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes:

  • Phyllo dough dries out quickly; keep it covered with a damp cloth when not in use.
  • For a variation, add spinach or other vegetables to the filling.
