Lahori Fried Fish


Lahori food is all about the delicious dishes from the city of Lahore, known for its amazing food scene. One standout favorite is the street-style fried fish, a popular treat not just in Lahore but all over Pakistan, especially during the winter. The fish is coated in a tasty mixture of gram flour (besan) and spices before being shallow fried to perfection.

  • 700 g white fish fillet
  • 1 cup garam flour
  • ½ cup corn flour
  • 2 tbsp rice flour
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp carom seeds
  • 1 tbsp dried fenugreek (Methi)
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp crushed red chilli
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • ½ tbsp salt
  • Water as required
  • Oil for shallow frying


  1. Mix garam flour, corn flour, rice flour and all the spices in a big bowl. Combine all ingredients and slowly add water until a thick paste is made.
  2. Cut the fish into pieces you like and dry them with a paper towel to make sure they feel dry when touched.
  3. Put the fish pieces in the batter and make sure they are fully covered. Put plastic wrap on the bowl and let it sit for at least 2 hours.
  4. Put oil in a pan for cooking without submerging. To see if the oil is hot enough, put a little bit of batter in it. If the oil floats and little bubbles come out, it’s good to use for cooking. Adjust the heat to medium.
  5. Put the fish pieces in the oil, don’t put too many or they won’t cook right. Cook until both sides turn golden.
  6. Use a paper towel to get rid of extra oil from the cooked fish.
  7. Serve right away with mint sauce to make it tasty.


You have the flexibility to choose any white-fleshed fish for this recipe. I opted for Barramundi, and other suitable options include snapper, sole, basa, or grouper. Freshwater fish can also be a great choice.
