Traditional Pakistani Chai Tea

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 ¼ cup of water
  • 2 teaspoons of loose tea leaves
  • A pinch of cinnamon powder (optional)
  • 1 small green cardamom (optional)
  • Sugar to taste


  1. In a saucepan, heat the water on high heat. When water starts boiling, mix in tea leaves, cinnamon powder, and cardamom. Lower down the heat and let this water simmer for 2 minutes.
  2. Now, pour in the milk and increase the heat.
  3. As milk starts boiling, the chai tea will rise in the pan. At this stage, remove the pan from the heat for 2 seconds and put it back on the heat. Do this several times for 3 to 4 minutes to really develop a strong and real taste.
  4. Pour this tea into cups using a sieve and add sugar according to your taste.


For a healthier swap, consider substituting sugar with stevia, honey or brown sugar.
