Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s Pie is a classic British comfort food, featuring a flavorful layer of ground lamb and vegetables, topped with creamy mashed potatoes. It’s a hearty and satisfying dish perfect for a family meal.

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 1 hour
Resting Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Serving: 6

  • 500g ground lamb
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb stock
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 800g potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup grated cheddar cheese (optional)

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Boil the potatoes until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with milk, butter, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, cook the ground lamb over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. Add onions, carrots, and garlic to the lamb; cook until softened.
  5. Stir in tomato paste, peas, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Transfer the lamb mixture to a baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes on top. Sprinkle with grated cheese if desired.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden.
  8. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

  • For a non-traditional twist, sweet potatoes can be used instead of regular potatoes for the mash.
  • If lamb is not available, ground beef can be substituted, though the dish would technically be called “Cottage Pie.”
