Tteokbokki (Spicy Korean Cakes)


It’s a dish called Tteokbokki made with rice cakes, fish cakes, boiled egg, and spicy chili paste. The rice cakes are chewy, and it can be really spicy, but you can make it less spicy if you want. You can find it easily at street food stalls in Korea, where it’s always ready to eat. If you like, you can add sesame seeds for extra flavor.

  • 3 cups water
  • 2 dried anchovies (adjust to taste)


  • 3 tablespoons chili paste
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup

Additional Ingredients:

  • 2 Korean fish cakes, sliced
  • ½ onion, thickly sliced
  • 1 spring onion, thickly sliced


  1. In a saucepan, bring water and anchovies to a boil. Let it cook for 10 minutes, then remove the anchovies.
  2. In a bowl, mix chile paste, sugar, soy sauce, and corn syrup to make the sauce.
  3. Add rice cakes and onion to the anchovy-infused water in the saucepan. Pour in the sauce. Bring it to a boil and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add spring onion to the mixture and let it boil for an additional 3 minutes. Stir well during the cooking process.

Avoid overcooking the rice cakes to prevent them from becoming mushy.
