Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes
Serving: 4

Ingredients:

  • 400g Korean rice cakes (tteok)
  • 4 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 100g fish cakes, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • 1 boiled egg (optional)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Method:

  1. Soak the Rice Cakes:
    • If the rice cakes are refrigerated and hard, soak them in warm water for 10-15 minutes until they soften.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a large pan, combine water, gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, and garlic. Stir well to dissolve the pastes and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Cook the Tteokbokki:
    • Add the rice cakes and fish cakes to the pan. Stir gently and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the rice cakes become soft and the sauce thickens.
    • Add the sliced onions and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. The sauce should be thick and glossy by now.
  4. Final Touches:
    • Add the chopped green onions and stir into the Tteokbokki. Remove from heat.
    • Serve hot and garnish with sesame seeds. Optionally, top with a halved boiled egg.

Notes:

  • Adjust the level of spiciness by modifying the amount of gochugaru.
  • Tteokbokki is best enjoyed fresh due to the texture of the rice cakes becoming hard when cooled.
  • For an additional layer of flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of honey for a complex sweetness.
