Chocolate sheet cake is a classic American dessert that has been enjoyed for generations. The cake is typically made with basic ingredients such as flour, sugar, cocoa powder, butter, eggs, and buttermilk, resulting in a moist and tender texture. The frosting, often poured over the warm cake, is made with powdered sugar, butter, cocoa powder, and milk, creating a decadent and fudgy topping.

Total time: 1 hour 50 minutes
Serves: 24

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

For the frosting:

  • ½ cup butter
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 5 tablespoons milk
  • 1 (16 ounce) box confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and prepare an 11×17 jelly roll pan by greasing it lightly.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the white sugar and flour. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of butter, water, and 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Stir over medium heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Pour this melted butter mixture over the sugar and flour mixture, and beat until well combined. Then, beat in the baking soda, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
  5. Meanwhile, in another small saucepan, combine the remaining 1/2 cup of butter, 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder, and milk. Stir over medium heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth.
  6. Beat in the powdered sugar until the frosting is smooth. Stir in the pecans, then pour the frosting over the cooled cake. Enjoy!

Notes:
When pouring the melted butter mixture into the dry ingredients, do so gradually while stirring continuously. This helps ensure that the batter is well mixed and free of lumps, resulting in a smooth and even-textured cake.
