Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
Serving: 16 brownies

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (65g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (90g) chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Method:

  1. Preheat and Prepare:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Melt Butter and Mix Dry Ingredients:
    • Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in sugar, eggs, and vanilla.
    • Beat in cocoa, flour, salt, and baking powder. Spread batter into the prepared pan.
  3. Add Extras and Bake:
    • Sprinkle chocolate chips and optional nuts over the top of the batter.
    • Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Do not overcook; the brownies should be soft in the center.
  4. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow to cool in pan on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing into squares.

Notes:

  • For a richer flavor, you can replace granulated sugar with brown sugar.
  • To check for doneness, insert a toothpick into the center. It should come out with a few moist crumbs attached, not completely clean.
  • These brownies are perfect for customizing with various additions like peanut butter, caramel, or mint chips.
